There are two types of thermal printings and each one offers specific benefits.
Direct thermal printing: This technique utilizes heat-sensitive media, that blackens when passes under the printhead. The direct thermal printers, noted for their simplicity, does not use any ribbons. Though, the printers have a considerably shelf life but are not well suited for environments that expose them to long periods of direct sunlightor abrasion, and heat. And precisely, this is the reason why tags, ticket stock or thermal labels are top-coated to resist such environment. It produces sharp print quality with excellent scan ability. For any short-term labeling application, direct thermal is the most effective and efficient print method.
Thermal transfer printing: Thermal transfer printing labels are easily identified by their crisp, often glossy printed surfaces. The major reason of this clarity is, the use of thin ribbon roll, that gets heated by the printhead and melts onto the label to form the image. This technology is impervious to heat and moisture. The generated image cannot be rubbed off. And this makes the printed labels more durable, long-lived products. This technology produces consistent, reliable printing on every label, as the colour and the density is determined by the printer’s resolution and the ribbon.
